Sub Solar Point
Students are taught that the sun has two apparent motions: a daily motion from east to west and an annual motion from north to south and back. While the first motion is obvious, the second is more difficult to see. At the same time, the north-south motion is one of the main causes of seasons. This model shows the “sub solar point”, the point on the earth’s surface where the sun is exactly overhead at that instant. In June, this point would be close to the Tropic of Cancer and move south to the Tropic of Capricorn in December.
The model is available in two forms, a student version that is made from card and a teacher version that is made from acrylic. Both models have maps of the earth printed on them and are centred at the location of the school; as a result, the kits are designed separately for each location. The acrylic model is specially designed and fabricated as per orders.
